Coventry OutSpoke is Coventry’s queer collective, working to strengthen the city’s LGBT+ community with the aim of increasing our visibility and raising our collective voices by leading the change and having fun. We are made up of a group of like-minded LGBTQIA+ people who want to make Coventry a better place for LGBT people, with more safe venues and more events for the community.
In this article I’m going to tell you more about the group, what we’ve done, what we want to do, and how you can keep in touch and get involved in Coventry OutSpoke.
On the last Sunday of May, we had our first event as a group, an LGBT picnic in War Memorial Park. The aim of the event was to get the LGBTQIA+ community in Coventry together. We want to create a fun and safe space for everyone to come and be together as a community safely, easily and comfortably.
The picnic allowed people to find out more about Cov OutSpoke and what we’re doing. We wanted people to find out who we are and what we’re doing and from this picnic we definitely succeeded in spreading the word about the group.
The picnic was the group’s short-term goal so that we could create something for the LGBT community in Coventry whilst we worked on our larger goals.
Our larger goals are creating a landing page so that all LGBT events in Coventry can be found in one place and building a training or workshop-type programme to help make business more LGBT friendly and to show people that there is backing behind a business’ LGBT friendly claims.
Thanks to the success of our LGBT Picnic, we have decided to run them throughout the summer. The picnic will be on the last Sunday of each month for the remainder of the summer.
